"These apartments are on Carolina beach in North Carolina. We were there on a short break and I just came across them. The magic of entering a totally different era as soon as you walk in was just fantastic. I wanted to paint the experience I felt, taking me straight back to childhood memories of quirky motels with inviting swimming pools. I was always crazy about water as a kid. I met Joy Lee that day, and she was circa 1960 herself, delightful and perfectly preserved. Her father had built the motels the year she was born and named them after her. She had inherited them, and preserved their fabulous architecture all these years. I love the nostalgia and story of this painting. It invites you to bring your own narrative of magical summers as a child. Whether you had them or not!" –Rachel Campbell
