"Picnic at Sunset is an important painting for me, combining many themes I have been painting for years. The family is picnicking at the edge of a cliff. The boy is climbing a small, unstable tree that reaches out over the crevasse. I was thinking about Edward Hicks’ Peaceable Kingdom paintings when I started working on the compositions. Then, at some point, I started thinking about cliffs and roadrunner cartoons. Of course, I’m almost always thinking about family. Things that I find nostalgic, like macaroni and cheese, deviled eggs and childhood, always seem fragile, about to fall apart. My work is often about the things that we weren’t supposed to talk about in art school—children, bunny rabbits, picnics—and how they embody worry and fear." –Ashley Norwood Cooper
