Bramble is a story of friendship and art. Cooper sees herself as the pink rabbit, which is a personal homage to a late friend. The Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is referenced here, but the figures are also reminiscent of friends of the artist.
"The bramble has become my “Arcadia”."
“Arcadia” is Virgil’s imaginary world which is rural and populated by mythical figures like Aristaeus, Orpheus and Eurydice. Nicolas Poussin painted Arcadia. It's a utopia, with realistic undertones.
"Just as Virgil’s Arcadia was inspired by his own farm in Italian country side, my paintings are inspired by Cooperstown and Otsego County." –Ashley Norwood Cooper
