The Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is referenced here, but the figures are also reminiscent of friends of the artist.
"The bramble has become my “Arcadia”."
“Arcadia” is Virgil’s imaginary world which is rural and populated by mythical figures like Aristaeus, Orpheus and Eurydice. Nicolas Poussin painted Arcadia. It's a utopia, with realistic undertones.
