Also from my time in Scotland: I was really taken with the long period of dusk each day that would set in toward the winter months. The sky would turn all kinds of pinks and purples, and the fading light would completely flatten space visually. As the shrubs and trees lost their leaves, they would become a beautiful filigree of shapes outlined in the space. In these works I was returning in part to work I had done when I lived in the UK for many years (1996-2003). All my paintings from that period were two-dimensional, flattening space. When I came to the States the sudden strong bright light became an important feature in my work.
