INVISIBLE SUN
GABE BROWN
April 23 – May 28th, 2022
Painting is a solitary act. This series of paintings and works on paper encapsulate an inert feeling of isolation and quiet calm. They are a direct reaction to the complexity of the world and how Brown identifies with it. There is no limit to the understanding and exploration of time and space. Imbuing personal symbolism and elements that are not necessarily logical, these paintings are not only a nod to abstraction and landscape but ultimately to an alternate universe and the fourth dimension.

VIRTUAL EXHIBITION

“Art is like magic, an illusion created
by the force of humanity. Our choices in
life can be amazing portals for adventure.
For me, these possibilities present themselves
through the process of painting: researching
potent images, configuring them on canvas,
and struggling to imbue them with a sense
of myself and my own wonder at the
enormous complexity of the world.“
– Gabe Brown, Artist
Brown’s paintings aim to create a secret recipe for an inner landscape of the human condition; narrative vignettes that are both alluring and mysterious. Nature, and those elements existing in its microcosm become metaphors for a strange and at times super-reality, a parallel universe that questions the natural scheme of life itself.
Brown’s process is about luminosity. Each linen canvas is wrapped around a wood panel, treated with a series of grounds and then sanded. This process is repeated up to seven times in order to prepare an exquisite surface that receives paint in a layered and ethereal manner. Her washes and compositions come together over time like the layers of color and light one sees at the end of a day changing by the second. These painted layers are often sanded as well and final works have as many as 40 – 50 paint layers. Due to the drying times of the oil paints, she often works on a number of pieces and in a variety of formats at once in order to learn and discover from each piece as she goes.
“I am laser focused on the passage of time and compressed space in order to
create a pause or shift to reflect the dualities that exist between nature
and the human condition.”
– Gabe Brown, Artist

Gabe Brown is a contemporary artist currently based in New York. Her work encompasses a search for finding meaning in the unknown. Using a visual vocabulary derived from a world that often goes unnoticed, everyday events such as conversations between birds, forces that drive water, or the cellular structure of plant life, she begins to reinvent reality.
