LANDSCAPES OF EXPERIENCE AND MEMORY
Canberra based artist Lynne Flemons work embodies a sense of play as she exposes interactions between colour, pattern and movement in the landscape.
‘My work is about interpreting my experiences of being in the landscape through research drawings and watercolours done ‘en plein air’ and paintings in acrylic on canvas or polycotton in the studio.
This series is a culmination of works based on places that I’ve spent time in over the past couple of years; Old Minton at Nimmitabel, Kelton Plain on the Monaro Plains, Kianga on the South Coast, Lake Cathie on the North Coast, and Lake Wallace at Wallerawang have been the inspiration. These places hold special memories in my mind and imagination and this is reflected in my approach to imagery and colour. There is something about the intensity of real-life experiences in nature that inspire a heightened awareness and a desire to capture this, not just the look of it, but how it feels and sounds, how it moves and changes." - Lynne Flemons

As a young girl in a family of boys growing up in the rural towns of inland NSW, Australia,
Flemons relished alone time with her mother. And on weekend outings, the two explored
the landscape in their Ford Anglia. Perching on farm fences or the car hood, painting
en plein air, they captured aspects of the rural environment, a love of which has become
the basis of her career as an artist.Believing that "landscape molds you as a person,” Lynne Flemons' modernist-inspired landscapes
offer a contemporary lens on life in Southern Australia and the beauty of the natural world around her.
Agitated brushstrokes and vivid colors play out in a variety of flora. Flemons collects moments
and places - "interpretations of my experiences of being immersed in the landscapes of my country."
She begins her process with "research drawings" and watercolors created while in the
landscape that become larger denser paintings back in the studio. -

Misty Trees And Blue Lake, Nimmitabel"This painting took a couple of stays at Nimmitabel to resolve as I needed to do some more drawing from the same location to give me some tips. I was aiming to capture the feeling that this landscape evokes. It was a misty morning from the bedroom window where I watched a wombat waddle, down past the old bit of fence left remaining, during heavy rain (on another occasion). The layering of the trees which were just coming into leaf early Spring proved to be a challenge with all the linework. The resolve to try the contrasting blue shape of the lake helped to balance the composition. Now I love this painting's softness and the memory of its difficult birth - I nearly gave up on it several times." - Lynne Flemons

Farmhouse Shadow with Pines, Nimmitabel
"Usually, my drawings are quick. I did this one from the window of the farmhouse as I was excited by the shadow cast by the house and chimney and the other shrubs, the presence of the large pines and the garden path I walked down many times. Due to the rain and stormy days I worked on the drawing longer than usual and this resulted in this world of the shadow and the pine with shed and dam in the background." - Lynne Flemons

Wetland Walk, Kianga
"This painting came about after a weekend at Kianga on the South Coast of NSW. My friend had invited a group of artists for the weekend. The back deck looked out over a wetland and I was intrigued by the shapes and lines I could see. I made several quick line drawings here. We walked along the beach which was accessed via this wetland area. The memory of our walk along the beach with landforms inlets and the sea to wow us and my deck drawings informed this painting." - Lynne Flemons
