"All of my painting, all of my art, is about meaning and materiality. I try to tell a story that can only be told in paint and make an object that can only be truly seen in person. The heaviness of the bees, the way sunlight is a drip over a leaf. The way the rope hammock is not just a picture of a hammock but a hammock constructed with a palette knife (I actually read the directions for making a rope hammock) - I want that materiality. I look at abstract paintings as much as representational painting. I am looking for ways of knowing that can only happen in paint." - Ashley Norwood Cooper
