Sarah More US, b. 1978

Overview
More's brightly colored and heavily patterned paintings and drawings recall traditional American quilt patterns, ornate stained glass windows, and colorful mosaics. Inspired by the Geometric Abstractionists and Bauhaus Designers - Sonia Delaunay (originally named Sarah as well), Anni Albers, and Gunta Stölzl - More creates each piece by hand using gouache though they are often mistaken for digital designs.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, More was raised in Portland, OR and Houston, TX. Growing up she was surrounded by her mother’s handmade quilts and her father’s large collection of rocks and minerals, both of which greatly influenced her work. More holds an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA in textile design from the Rhode Island School of Design.
More credits her time as a studio assistant to Takashi Murakami for her love of precision and eye for detail. More taught art history at Penn State, and various other institutions while working in design manufacturing and factory production management. She recently completed a large scale mural for the Meta Open Arts program, which in part incited her relocation to Seattle.
More's first solo with ZINC contemporary entitled BEFORE & AFTER opens this spring. -

Biography
“My work deals with the interaction of color and pattern as well as the complicated relationship between the digital and the handmade. Crafted without the use of tapes or masking films, each piece appears to be created digitally. However, upon closer inspection, one sees evidence of the hand in the form of slight human imperfections that reveal the true nature of each object. This process of making provides me with both a meditative and dynamic experience.
I implement sets of formal rules onto my canvases, not always having a clear understanding of the final piece. Beginning with an underlying structure drawn in pencil, this process allows me to ride the line between control and accident, and while some components are clear from the beginning, others reveal themselves as each piece unfolds. I am inspired by traditional methods of textile construction, and I tend to work the canvas as I would if I were weaving, one “weft” at a time, building the piece from a concentrated area out.” - Sarah More
